Looking Is Not Enough
The brief was to create an interactive installation using light to explore the themes of Freedom and Loss.
I chose to show the loss of freedom ex-offenders feel when released from prison. Many struggle to fit back into a society which has a strong stigma against them or are scared to go back to the life they used to have before prison. This causes them to reoffend just to go back to prison where they feel safer.
We were asked to create a small piece within the main piece to further emphasise our message. For this, I made a box of a prisoner’s belongings to really show how little they have. In the box, among other things, was a small book which read:
“Outside I am invisible to those who can help me, but inside I am invisible to those who can help me.”
